Purchase mp3 downloads of a lecture series by Dr. R. Steven Notley.

“Are You The One Who Is To Come?” is a five-part lecture series by Dr. R. Steven Notley, that focuses on the complex relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist in light of Second Temple period Jewish sources.

The lecture series was recorded in Holland, Michigan, September 19-21, 2002 for the En-Gedi Resource Center (https://EnGediResourceCenter.com), and was originally available for purchase on CD. These hard-to-find recordings are now available as downloadable .mp3 audio files from the JP Bookstore, so listeners can take a front row seat at Dr. Notley’s lectures.

Lectures in the series include:

  • Session One: The Gospel According to John the Baptist (approx. 56 minutes)
  • Session Two: “Are You the One Who Is To Come?”: Jesus and John the Baptist (approx. 61 minutes)
  • Session Three: Resurrection and the Suffering of the Righteous (approx. 62 minutes)
  • Session Four: Abel, Jesus, and the Son of Man: The Hope for Redemption (approx. 51 minutes)
  • Session Five: Do This and Live! The Ethics of Jesus (approx. 47 minutes)

Thanks to Lois Tverberg for allowing Jerusalem Perspective to add these items to the JP Bookstore, and to Pieter Lechner for remastering the audio for an enhanced listening experience.

I am grateful to JP for making this 2002 series available. The intertestamental period has always been something of a black hole for me, but thanks to Dr. Notley’s clear and engaging lectures, I now have a much better appreciation of the historical backdrop—the “prequel,” so to speak—to the Gospels.

I particularly enjoyed Notley’s personal stories about David Flusser and Shmuel Safrai. What a great loss that these remarkable scholars are no longer with us….

I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants to better understand the world in which Jesus lived—and, importantly, how that world shaped and informed his teachings.
